National Poetry Day

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 1:15pm

To celebrate national poetry day on Thursday 5th October, we have been looking at a poem by Kit Wright in our literacy lessons. The poem is called The Magic Box. We began by looking at the language in the poem and the use of exciting vocabulary, alliteration and metaphors, discussing the effect this has on the reader. In our teams, we then performed the poem. We included actions and tried to use different voices.

Finally it was time to write our own versions of the poem! We followed the same structure as Kit Wright but used our imagination to come up with things we would like to put in the box! There were lots of amazing ideas of magical things we could put in the box.  Some examples include:

  • the howl of a werewolf on a red moon
  • a wave as blue as a dolphin
  • a mermaid's tail from 500 years ago
  • the first tree from the Amazon rainforest

And so many more! You can read some examples below.
