We have really been enjoying our science lessons in Year 5. This week we have started our new topic: forces. The pupils could remember lots of their learning from forces in Y3 as well as what we learnt about gravity at the start of this year! To begin, we used the newton meters to measure different forces. We measured the pull of a spring, the pull of an elastic band and the lifting of a weight. The pupils worked very well together and we already have lots of questions that we can investigate next week!

Last term we learnt about materials. We looked at ways of separating materials through filtering, sieving and evaporating and investigated which materials were soluble and which were insoluble. Our favourite lesson was when we looked at reversible and irreversible changes and we found that some changes formed of new materials. We mixed bicarbonate of soda with vinegar which formed carbon dioxide causing the ‘rocket’ to shoot into the air
