Celebrating National Coding Week!

This week we took part in National Coding Week and had lots of fun learning all about what coding is and why it is so important.

We started by talking about what coding means – giving a computer instructions so it knows what to do. The children were quick to notice that coding is like giving step-by-step directions, just like when we follow a recipe or get ready for school.

We also learnt about algorithms. We discovered that an algorithm is simply a set of instructions. To practise this idea, we played a game where the children had to follow my “algorithm” exactly. This led to some funny moments when the instructions weren’t quite what they expected – showing us how important it is to be clear and precise when coding!

Afterwards, we worked together as a class on an interactive coding game, where our challenge was to collect treasure. The children had to give the computer the correct set of instructions so our character could move around, avoid obstacles, and reach the prize. There was lots of teamwork, problem-solving, and cheering each other on when we succeeded! Here is a link if you'd like to play it at home: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go/resource/rustys-treasure-hunt-t-i-1652435107

The children really enjoyed learning how coding is all about creativity, logical thinking, and working together. We can’t wait to build on these skills even more in the future.
