Our first week in Year 1 🤩
Date: 3rd Sep 2026 @ 6:13pm
We have had a wonderful first few days in Year 1! It has been fantastic to see how well the children have settled into their new classroom and begun their exciting journey together.
The children are already learning to follow our new routines and expectations, and they have been doing an amazing job. They are becoming excellent listeners and fantastic tidy-uppers, helping to keep our classroom organised and ready for learning. We are so proud of how positively they have approached these first few days.
The children have loved exploring all of the different areas in our classroom and discovering our new outdoor area. They have particularly enjoyed Lego building, water play and imaginative play, using their creativity to explore, build and play together.
📖 English
In English, we read the lovely story The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. We talked about how Vashti began her artwork with just one simple dot and thought about how we can use our own ideas and creativity to make something special.
The children then created their own pictures using a dot as their starting point, just like Vashti. It was wonderful to see the different ideas and imaginative creations they came up with!
🔢 Maths
In maths, we have been recapping our learning about subitising. The children have been practising recognising small amounts quickly without needing to count each object.
We have also been revisiting how to identify which groups have more or less, developing our mathematical language and confidence when comparing amounts.
🎨 Art
In art, we have been learning about the Danish artist Molly Haslund. We looked at her wonderful artwork featuring circles and spirals and used these as inspiration for our own creations.
The children enjoyed experimenting with circles, spirals and different ways of creating patterns, showing lots of creativity and enthusiasm.
It has been such a lovely start to Year 1, and I am incredibly proud of how well the children have settled and how enthusiastically they have embraced their new routines, learning and experiences.
We have had a wonderful first few days in Year 1, and I am so excited for the year ahead! 🌈✨
