Reception Autumn 2 week 4

Date: 21st Nov 2025 @ 12:57pm

This week in Reception we have continued exploring our Autumn theme. The weather has turned very cold, and the children noticed lots of seasonal changes, including frost on the ground in the mornings. We talked about how the colder weather affects us and how important it is to wrap up warm. We have been practising putting on our hats, scarves, and gloves independently. Lots of children are trying very hard with this, and although it can be tricky, they are making great progress! Please continue to support your child with this at home.

In literacy, we continued our learning around the story Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. We explored some of the vocabulary from the story and discussed what the words mean and how we could use them in our own sentences. For our focus task, we thought about how the baby owls felt when they woke up to find that their mother had gone. The children used their phonics brilliantly to write about the owls’ feelings, including writing that they were sad.

In the creative area, we used forks as painting tools to create a new texture for the owls’ feathers. We learned that by using different materials and techniques, we can make a variety of exciting artistic effects. The children really enjoyed experimenting and exploring!

In maths, we moved on to learning about one less. We created our own number stories to demonstrate what happens when you take 1 away from a given number. The children are becoming very confident with this idea and enjoyed acting out the changes using practical resources and pictures.

It has been another busy and engaging week in Reception. Well done to all the children for their hard work and enthusiasm!
