Reception Blog – Autumn 2 Week 1
Date: 31st Oct 2025 @ 4:32pm
Welcome back! We have had a fantastic first week of Autumn 2 with a fun and spooky Halloween theme to start the term.
We had our very own class pumpkin, which we loved scooping, carving and decorating. We turned off the lights and watched it glow brightly in the dark. It was very exciting!
To develop our fine motor skills, we used tweezers to carefully pick up spiders from a web.
In the creative area, we used scissors and glue to make colourful pumpkin pictures and enjoyed colouring different Halloween scenes.
Outdoors, we had a brilliant time mixing magical potions and dressing up in spooky costumes with our friends.
In literacy, we read the story Room on the Broom. We talked about who was on the witch’s broomstick, drew the characters, and used our phonics to label them.
This week, we have also had a special focus on name writing. We are learning to recognise our names and to hold our pencils comfortably and correctly using a tripod grip. Please continue to help your child practise writing their name at home.
In maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We discovered that 3D shapes are solid and we have been spotting them all around us in the classroom and outdoor area. For our focus task, we used 3D shapes to build towers and investigated which shapes could stack and which would roll away. We even held our own pumpkin rolling competition! We found out that the pumpkin is a sphere with a curved edge, that’s why it could roll so far!
We ended the week with a fabulous Spooky Disco on Friday. The children had a wonderful time dressing up, singing, and dancing to the Halloween music.
What a brilliant start to the new term! We are excited for all the learning adventures still to come in the weeks ahead.
