Reception Blog – Autumn 2, Week 2

Date: 10th Nov 2025 @ 10:35am

This week in Reception our theme has been Bonfire Night, and we’ve had a sparkling week full of colour, creativity, and learning!

We began by learning why we celebrate Bonfire Night and how people mark the occasion with fireworks, bonfires, and special treats. The children had lots of fun creating their own beautiful representations of bonfires and fireworks using a variety of materials such as paint, tissue paper, glitter, and chalk. Our classroom has never looked so bright and colourful!

In literacy, we finished our work on the story Room on the Broom. We explored some of the trickier vocabulary from the story and talked about what the words mean. For our focus task, we discussed how it wasn’t kind of the dragon to want to eat the witch for his tea, so we thought of some healthy foods that he could eat instead! The children drew their ideas and used their phonics to label their pictures, there were some very creative and healthy menus!

In maths, we moved on to learning about 2D shapes. We discussed the names and properties of shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. The children enjoyed going on a shape hunt around the classroom and outdoor area, spotting shapes in everyday objects all around us.

On Friday, we began our new P.E. sessions for this half term – dance! The children listened carefully to the instructions, followed the rhythm of the music, and had great fun moving in different ways.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who attended Parents’ Evening this week. It was lovely to meet with you all and share the children’s fantastic work, as well as talk about everything they have been learning and achieving in Reception. Thank you for all of your positive feedback and for your continued support and commitment to helping the children with their learning at home. It really makes a big difference!

It’s been another exciting and busy week in Reception. We are so proud of how hard the children are working and can’t wait to see what next week brings!
