Reception Blog – Autumn 2, Week 3

Date: 14th Nov 2025 @ 1:43pm

This week in Reception we began our exciting new theme of Autumn. The children have loved exploring outdoors and spotting the signs of the season, such as the leaves changing colour and gently falling from the trees. We talked about the wildlife we might see at this time of year and discussed why it’s important to look after animals as the weather gets colder. To help care for them, the children had great fun making bird seed feeders and hanging them in our outdoor area – we can’t wait to see if any birds come to visit!

In literacy, we started our new story Owl Babies. For our focus task, the children drew the owls from the story and used their phonics to label them. In the creative area, we painted our own owls, carefully thinking about colours, shapes, and textures. Our beautiful owl artwork is now proudly displayed in the classroom for everyone to see!

In maths, we have been learning about “1 more than”. The children have worked hard to find one more than a given number up to 10 and are becoming very confident. We even created our own number stories to show how the quantities change when you add one more.

On Monday, we took part in Anti-Bullying Week by celebrating Odd Socks Day. Lots of children came to school wearing brightly coloured, mismatched socks to show that we are all unique and special in our own ways. Throughout the week, we have talked about the importance of kindness and have focused on carrying out different acts of kindness around school.

It was also World Nursery Rhyme Week, and we have had lots of fun singing a different rhyme each day. A big thank you to all the parents who have joined in at home – nursery rhymes play such an important role in children’s language development and early literacy skills.

On Tuesday, we marked Remembrance Day by printing our own poppies. The children learned about why people wear poppies and about the brave soldiers who helped to keep us safe during the war.

On Friday, we joined in with Children in Need by coming to school in our own clothes. We saw lots of bright colours, spotty outfits, and Pudsey Bear–themed clothes! We learned what Children in Need is and how our donations help people in need. We also had lots of fun creating our own Pudsey Bears and reading Pudsey Bear stories.

It has been a busy and meaningful week full of learning, creativity, and kindness. Well done, Reception!
