Reception Blog – Spring Term, Week 1

Date: 9th Jan 2026 @ 4:22pm

This week we were very excited to be back at school after the Christmas break, and it has been lovely to see all the children settle back into their routines so well.

On Monday, we had a very special surprise when we returned to school — it had snowed! The children were so excited to go outdoors and explore the snow. Some of the children even worked together to make snowmen and snowballs, which created lots of smiles and laughter. It was a wonderful way to begin our learning about winter.

We have also begun exploring our new Space theme. The children have been very enthusiastic about our new space station role-play area in the classroom and have enjoyed taking turns pretending to be astronauts, engineers, and explorers.

In literacy, we started our new book Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. This is a beautiful story all about our planet, Earth. We have been taking time to explore the book carefully, talking about all the different things on our planet and learning how we can help to take care of it. For our focus task, the children wrote about their favourite things on Planet Earth, and we were so impressed with their ideas and efforts.

We also took part in some fun snowman-themed name writing. Each part of the snowman’s body represented a letter from the children’s name. The children carefully built their snowmen in the correct order and then decorated them ready for our classroom display. This was a fantastic way to practise name recognition and letter formation in a creative way.

In maths, we have started the year by developing our number skills to 10, with a particular focus on confidently counting 6, 7, and 8. It is very important that we consolidate these skills before moving on to larger numbers, and the children have been working really hard.

We have also had lots of fun in the creative area this week. The children enjoyed both space- and winter-themed playdough and created some beautiful paintings and pictures which are now proudly displayed in our classroom.

On Friday we had our P.E session in the hall. This term we are moving on to gymnastics. Today we practised moving our bodies into different positions and holds and then played a few games moving in different ways such as hopping and jumping.

It has been a fantastic start to the new term, and we are looking forward to lots more learning and exploring in the weeks ahead.
