🦁 Reception – Summer 2, Week 6 🦁
Date: 17th Jul 2026 @ 6:18pm
We have had a really busy and fun-filled week in Reception with lots of exciting events and learning!
📚 Literacy – The Ugly Five
This week we started our final story by Julia Donaldson, The Ugly Five. We chose this book because it is centred around African animals, making it the perfect story to finish our Amazing Animals topic.
The children have loved learning about the different animals in the story and discovering lots of interesting facts about them.
For our focused Literacy task, each child chose an African animal and created a fact file. They used their phonics knowledge brilliantly to write facts about their chosen animal, and we were so impressed with their independence and enthusiasm.
🔢 Maths – Time
In Maths, we moved on to learning about time.
We started the week by thinking about our daily routines. The children were fantastic at using time vocabulary such as first, next, then and finally to describe the order of events throughout their day.
Towards the end of the week, we began looking at clocks and talking about telling the time. This is a skill the children will continue to develop in Year 1, but they made a brilliant start by making their own clocks, carefully labelling the numbers and attaching movable hands to show different times.
🏃 Sports Day
On Thursday, we held our Sports Day.
The children all tried their very best and thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the different races. They showed fantastic determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship, cheering each other on throughout the morning.
The highlight for many of the children was definitely the parents' race! Thank you to everyone who came along to support us and to those who took part. The children absolutely loved having you there and it made the day even more special.
🎪 Circus Day
On Friday, the circus came to Abbott!
We began the day by taking part in a circus skills workshop, where the children learnt how to spin plates and juggle with scarves. They had so much fun trying out these new skills and showed great perseverance as they practised.
In the afternoon, we were treated to a spectacular circus show in the big top tent. Although it was very warm inside, the children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were amazed by all of the acts.
🌟 Looking Ahead
Next week is our final week together in Reception. It is hard to believe how quickly this year has gone!
We are looking forward to making lots more happy memories together before the children break up for the summer holidays and begin their exciting journey into Year 1.
We can't wait to enjoy one last fun-filled week together! ☀️🦒🎪✨
