Reception Week 3, Spring 2.

Date: 13th Mar 2026 @ 12:49pm

This week in Reception we celebrated British Science Week! The theme this year was “Curiosity: What’s your question?” and we spent the week thinking about how scientists ask questions to learn more about the world around them.

We talked about why asking questions is so important and how being curious helps us discover new things. The children enjoyed spotting science in everyday life and thinking about questions such as “What will happen if…?” and “Why does that happen?”

One of our favourite activities this week was making potions outdoors. The children mixed different colours together and carefully watched what happened when they combined them. We then added our special ingredient, which made the potions fizz and bubble! There were lots of excited reactions as the children observed the changes and shared their ideas about what might be happening.

The children showed fantastic curiosity, asking thoughtful questions, experimenting with different mixtures, and behaving just like real scientists. It was a fun and exciting way to explore science and learn through investigation.

This week in literacy we began our new story, The Three Little Pigs. It is the next book in our series of traditional tales that we are studying together. Although this is a familiar story to many of the children, we have been exploring it in more depth by talking about the characters and the repeated refrains in the story. We have also been thinking carefully about the main problems in the story and how the characters solved them.

Our focus task this week has been to design our very own wolf-proof house. The children have been using their imaginations to decide what strong materials they could build with and writing about what they would make their houses out of so that the wolf cannot blow them down!

We had great fun making our own little pigs out of paper tubes! We painted them pink and then added the features. They look great displayed in our classroom.

This week in maths we moved on to subtraction. We have been learning that when we take something away, the amount gets smaller.

The children have been using part–whole models to help them see how numbers change when something is taken away. We have also begun to write simple number sentences to represent our subtraction problems, helping us to understand how numbers work together.

To finish the week, we spent some time creating our Mother’s Day cards. The children worked very carefully and were very proud of their creations.

They are very excited to take their cards home and give them to the special females in their lives. We hope you have a lovely weekend together celebrating!
