Still life mixed media

Year 4 have been exploring the work of Paul Cezanne and Hilary Pecis. They explored the meaning of Impressionism, whilst also considering how simple techniques can demonstrate how an artist feels about the subject of their art. They focused on shadow, light and how composition can help to tell us a story about the artist or subject.

First we looked at simple and quick ways of painting and drawing fruit and vegetables. They considered the texture and how they could show this using simple brushstrokes and monotone. Then we practiced gestural drawing using three colours to show light and dark.

Finally, pupils focused on Pecis' work and how she tells a story through simple composition and bright patterns. They produced a mixed media collage, using paint, card and even featured their favourite book (just as Pecis does) to reflect their own story through their work.
