Understanding Identity in the community

As a school, we continue to develop all aspects of teaching and learning to embed an inclusive curriculum. We celebrate diversity, embedding the message that everybody is treated equally and fairly according to the Equality Act (2010). We share the ethos that we should accept and celebrate everybody for who they are. 

This week, Class 5 have looked at the definitions of gender identity within the LGBTQ+ community, alongside gender stereotypes. We discussed how we as a community can reduce the threats to these communities and how we can positive support all individuals. 

We looked at an activity in which, in teams, the children had to place specific statements related to issues in the LGBT community within a quadrant: common and not common, and threatening and not threatening. From this, the children learnt that some things we see in society may be threatening to others and how we as individuals and a community can do better to create inner peace. 

Continuing on from this, we also spoke about what love means and how love can be shown in many different ways. The children watched the video below and every person, including the teachers in the room, had a beaming smile by the end of it. The children expressed their pride in seeing the video and were humbled by the message. They then went on to write poems about what love means.
