Autumn 1 Week 2

Date: 9th Sep 2021 @ 3:49pm

The children have definitely settled into Year 4 extremely well! Although it has been a long and tiring first full week back, they have amazed me because of how hardworking and eager to please they are.

In Literacy, we have started our new book 'The Promise' and the children are very excited to find out more about the mysterious girl. We haven't read that much yet, but we have found out that the city is not a very nice place to live- the children wrote excellent list poems about the 'ugly city'. Additionally, to help learn spellings (homophones) we played a game called Quiz Quiz Trade. The children wrote one of the spellings on their whiteboards and had to ask their partner to say a sentence using the word, and continued to quiz other classmates.

In Maths, we have been getting to grips with our understanding of place value in 4-digit numbers. The children had the option of using dienes and place value counters to aid their learning. Once they were secure in their understanding, we moved onto rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. This proved challenging, however, with the use of number lines, the children were able to identify the 10/100 that came before and after the given number. They also made sure that they found the halfway point to help them visualise where the numbers would be placed, in order to be able to round them.

We have all really enjoyed our geography lessons, so far; the children have shown me that they are excellent map readers. We have been exploring climate in the UK and now know that it is generally hotter in the south of the UK because it is closer to the equator. We then moved onto identifying the different climates of countries around the world and were fascinated to learn that Brazil had a range of climates from dry and equatorial to warm and wet.

Also, we had our first Salford Red Devils session of the year with James and Fish where we learned how to hold a rugby ball properly, and how to travel with it.
