Week 5 in Reception

Date: 3rd Oct 2026 @ 8:45am

What another busy and exciting week we have had in Reception!

This week, we have continued our All About Me topic and have been thinking carefully about families, friendships and what makes us special.

🏠 Our Class is a Family

We have been enjoying the lovely story Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen. The story helped us to think about how a family doesn't only have to mean the people we are related to or live with at home. We talked about how our class can be a school family, where our teachers and classmates care for, help and look after one another.

For our focus task, the children drew pictures of their class family. They talked about who is part of our class family and explained why each person is important to them. It was wonderful to hear the children talking so positively about their friends and teachers. ❀️

In our creative area, we continued our learning about friendship by making friendship paper dolls. The children carefully decorated their dolls to look like themselves and their friends. We had lots of lovely conversations about the things that make each of us unique.

πŸ”’ Comparing Numbers

In Maths this week, we moved on to comparing numbers and amounts. We explored different groups of objects and talked about which group had more and which had fewer.

The children became very good at spotting which group had more objects, particularly when we used a very exciting resource from Miss Cordwell's bag... sweets! 🍬

We had lots of fun comparing the different amounts and explaining how we knew which group had more or fewer.

πŸ‚ Autumn and Harvest

On Thursday, we had a lovely afternoon as an EYFS unit, coming together to celebrate and learn more about autumn and harvest time.

Reception worked hard to make a delicious vegetable soup, while our Nursery friends baked some yummy bread. We then came together to share our food and enjoy our autumn treats while listening to a story.

The children were fantastic at working together, developing their independence and talking about the different vegetables and ingredients we were using. It was a lovely afternoon of learning, sharing and celebrating together. πŸ₯•πŸ₯”πŸž

πŸ“– National Poetry Day

Thursday was also National Poetry Day, so we were busy celebrating poetry too!

We joined in with our 'Say a Poem' lesson, which is always a favourite in Reception. We listened carefully, joined in with the words and had lots of fun learning and performing our poem together. We love seeing how confidently the children join in as they become more familiar with our poems!

🌳 Outdoor Adventures

We have also had lots of fun exploring and learning outdoors this week. From playing with our friends to investigating our environment, and even painting nails in our nail salon, there has been plenty to keep us busy!

Take a look at our photos to see what we have been getting up to in Reception this week! πŸ“ΈπŸ‚
