Week 6 in Reception

Date: 9th Oct 2026 @ 4:39pm

We have had another lovely week in Reception! We have continued our All About Me topic, focusing on feelings and emotions and learning more about how we feel and how we can recognise emotions in others.

🌈 The Colour Monster

This week, we have been enjoying the story The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas. This wonderful story helped us to explore different emotions and think about how our feelings can sometimes be a little muddled!

In Literacy, we shared the story and talked about how the different Colour Monsters were feeling. For our focus task, the children wrote about the emotions shown by the different monsters, using their developing writing skills to share their ideas.

We also enjoyed several circle times where we talked about different feelings, including happiness, sadness, anger, fear and calmness. We discussed what these emotions might feel like and, importantly, what we can do when we experience them. We are learning that all feelings are okay, and there are lots of ways we can manage them and ask for help when we need it.

🎨 Creative Colour Monsters

Our creative area was full of colourful creations this week! The children made their very own Colour Monsters by painting and decorating cardboard tubes. They thought carefully about the colours they wanted to use and the emotions their monsters might represent.

We also had a very exciting biscuit activity as we made Colour Monster biscuits! The children enjoyed getting creative with their baking and making their own colourful treats. What a delicious way to bring our learning to life! πŸͺ

πŸ”’ Comparing Numbers

In Maths, we continued our learning about comparing numbers and amounts. Last week, we explored groups of objects that were the same, and this week we challenged ourselves by comparing groups of non-identical objects.

The children practised looking carefully at two groups and deciding which group had more and which had fewer. We discussed how we can compare groups even when the objects look different, helping us to develop our mathematical thinking and confidence.

We have been working hard to explain our answers and use our mathematical vocabulary when comparing amounts.

πŸ’› Learning About Ourselves

It has been a lovely week of learning more about ourselves and one another. Through stories, discussions, creative activities and Maths, we have continued to develop our understanding of the world around us and the people in it.

We are so proud of the children's enthusiasm and the thoughtful conversations they have shared this week. We look forward to another exciting week of learning in Reception!
